What happens at the Arrowtown Autumn Festival?

Five days of food, wine, music, arts, comedy and sport, with a strong community feel. The favourites that come back every year include:

How did the Arrowtown Autumn Festival begin?

It started as a modest harvest gathering, a way of bringing the rural community and the town together. Four decades on, it has grown into one of the region's biggest celebrations of local creativity and of Arrowtown's autumn colour, without losing the small town feel that made it work in the first place.

How do you get from Queenstown to Arrowtown for the festival?

Drive. Arrowtown is 20 to 25 minutes from Queenstown, and there are two routes that take about the same time. The back way runs through Arthurs Point, past Coronet Peak and along Malaghans Road through farmland. The other way goes along Frankton Road, over the Shotover Bridge and past Lake Hayes. Take one there and the other home.

Go early on the big days. Parade and Market Day draws the biggest crowds, and an early arrival gets you a park, a coffee and a spot on the street before it fills.

What else is worth doing in Arrowtown in autumn?

Walk it. The colour along the Arrow River is at its best in festival week, and the village is small enough to wander end to end between events.

Visit the Arrowtown Chinese Settlement at the top of Buckingham Street, the restored home of the gold miners who worked this river in the 1800s. Its main track is suitable for wheelchairs and prams and takes under an hour.
