Is it safe to swim at the west coast beaches in winter?
Treat them as a walk rather than a swim. Piha and Karekare are surf beaches with strong currents, and they are at their best in winter for a wander on the black sand and a view of the waves.
If you are walking in the Waitākere or Hunua Ranges, use the cleaning stations at the track entrances. They are there to stop the spread of kauri dieback, and they are the reason there is still forest to walk through.
When should you drive in Auckland to avoid traffic?
Leave mid morning and come back either before the afternoon rush builds or after it has cleared. A drive that takes an hour at ten in the morning is a very different drive at half past four.
If the timing goes against you, stop somewhere good and wait it out rather than sitting in it. In winter the light goes early too, so a day on the west coast works best with an early start.
