Exploring the Worlds Edge Festival by Car

Exploring the Worlds Edge Festival by Car

If you’re planning a visit to Queenstown, Wānaka or Central Otago this October, the At the World’s Edge Festival is the perfect excuse to hit the road and treat yourself to something truly unique.

Running from 4 to 17 October 2025, this classical music and arts festival brings world-class musicians to some of the South Island’s most breathtaking venues — from lakeside wineries to alpine churches. It’s not just a concert series — it’s a reason to road trip.

What is the World’s Edge Festival?

Set against the dramatic landscapes of Queenstown, Wānaka, Cromwell, and Bannockburn, At the World’s Edge blends international talent with local magic. Think chamber music in wine cellars, piano recitals with mountain views, and curated cultural experiences you won’t find anywhere else.

3 Scenic Drives to Build Around the Festival

1. Queenstown to Bannockburn (via Gibbston)

Start in Queenstown and head through the Kawarau Gorge, stopping at the historic Gibbston Valley wineries. Perfect for a lunch stop before arriving in Bannockburn, where the golden hills host several intimate festival venues.

Bonus: Park up at Mt Difficulty Winery and catch a sunset performance.

2. Wānaka to Cardrona to Arrowtown

Base yourself in Wānaka and take the Crown Range Road over to Arrowtown — one of the most scenic alpine drives in the country. Catch a show in Arrowtown’s historic Athenaeum Hall, then wind your way back past Cardrona Hotel for a nightcap.

Note: Our hybrids handle the Crown Range like a breeze.

3. Cromwell to Clyde to Alexandra

If you’re going further east, base yourself in Cromwell and spend a day exploring the heritage towns along Lake Dunstan. Festival events often pop up in unexpected spots — an old church, a vineyard, or even a barrel room.

Explore by day, enjoy music by night.

Why Drive?

This isn’t a festival you’ll want to Uber between. The magic lies in the landscape — the backroads, the golden hills, the vineyards and valleys that set the stage. Having a car gives you the freedom to explore at your own pace and soak up the region while you're here.
