From Start Line to Skyline: Make the Most of Marathon Weekend

The Queenstown Marathon on Saturday 14 November 2026: the races, the expo, getting to the start, where to watch, and how to spend the rest of the week.
Every November, Queenstown fills with people in running shoes. The Queenstown Marathon calls itself the world's most beautiful, and it has a fair case: the course runs from the Arrowtown end of the basin past Millbrook, Lake Hayes and the Shotover River, along Lake Wakatipu and through the Queenstown Gardens to finish in the middle of town. The 2026 race is on Saturday 14 November.
Race day itself is well organised and most runners never need to drive it. Where a car from Evolve Rentals earns its place is everything around it: the expo, the supporters chasing the course, the recovery day, and the rest of a week that most people are not flying all this way to spend sitting down.
What races are there at the Queenstown Marathon?
Four. The full marathon, the half, the 10km and a 2.2km kids' run in the Queenstown Gardens, which is where the next generation of marathon runners get their first taste of a crowd. About 70 per cent of the course is on hard packed trail and the rest is on road, so it runs through countryside rather than past car parks.
It is a big event. More than 13,000 runners and walkers registered for the 11th edition, which makes for a busy week in town. Everything official, from entries to course maps, is on the Queenstown Marathon website.
Where do you collect your race bib?
At the event expo in the Queenstown Events Centre on Joe O'Connell Drive in Frankton. In 2026 it is open from midday to 7pm on Thursday 12 November and from 10am to 8pm on Friday 13 November. If you cannot make it, somebody else can collect your bib for you with your QR code.
The Events Centre is in Frankton rather than town, close to the airport and to our office on Glenda Drive, so it is an easy stop on the way in from a flight or a short drive from wherever you are staying.
How do runners get to the start line?
By shuttle, mostly. The starts are spread across the basin and shuttles run on race morning from the Event Hub at the Queenstown Recreation Ground. There is only limited drop off and parking near the start lines, so the organisers recommend the shuttle, and so do we. Nobody wants to be looking for a park at dawn with 42 kilometres to run.
Roads along the course close on race day, and the closures are published on the marathon website beforehand. Check them before you plan any driving that Saturday, especially if you are supporting.
Where can supporters watch the Queenstown Marathon?
The organisers publish a spectator map with viewing points and how to reach them, and it is worth studying the night before. Supporting a runner on a point to point course is its own endurance event. With a car you can catch them early, get back into town ahead of them, and be at the finish in the middle of Queenstown with a coffee in hand when they come through. Allow for the road closures, and park well away from the course.
What should you do after the Queenstown Marathon?
Recover properly. Our guide to warming up and unwinding indoors has the saunas, spas and massages, and every one of them works just as well on marathon legs in November as it does on a snowy day.
Then use the days either side. Arrowtown is a gentle wander with good food, and our Arrowtown guide has where to go. The drive to Glenorchy is 45 minutes along the lake, and our Glenorchy guide has the walks for anybody whose legs still work. And for the celebration dinner, our pick of restaurants worth the drive has somewhere for every kind of finish time. If the celebration involves a drink, sort out who is driving first.
Getting the car sorted
With thousands of runners and their supporters arriving in the same week, book the car when you book your bed. We bring it to you, which nobody else in Queenstown does and which is the whole reason Evolve exists. Somebody from our team meets you where you are staying and walks you round the car, which saves your legs for the part of the week that matters. Or collect from us at 153b Glenda Drive in Frankton, near the airport and a few minutes from the expo.
So book your car with Evolve Rentals, pick up your bib, take the shuttle on race morning, and leave the car for the victory lap afterwards.
