Mother’s Day in Queenstown: Treat Mum to Something Special (11 May)

Mother's Day falls in the second week of May, which in Queenstown is about the best fortnight of the year to be handed a free Sunday. The autumn colour is at its peak, the summer crowds have gone, and the town is briefly calm enough to enjoy at walking pace. A card and flowers will do. When is Mother's Day in New Zealand?

Worth putting in the calendar properly rather than relying on remembering, because in Queenstown it is also the weekend the good tables go. Booking two weeks out is comfortable. Booking on the Friday is optimistic.

What is Queenstown like that weekend?

Golden, cold in the mornings, and quiet in a way it never is in January. Early May is the tail of the autumn colour, and Arrowtown is where it concentrates. The trees along the old streets and down by the river turn the whole village the colour people come from overseas to photograph.

It is also genuinely cold before about ten in the morning, so an early start needs a coat and a plan that involves a building. Plenty of Mother's Day plans here fail on a frost nobody checked for.

There is a quiet advantage in the timing that nobody mentions. The Arrowtown Autumn Festival comes earlier in the season, so by Mother's Day the colour is still up and the crowd it pulls in has gone home. You get the photograph without the queue for the car park, which in Arrowtown in autumn is not a small thing. The same is true of the walking tracks and the cafes. Two or three weeks earlier they are full.

Where should you take her for brunch?

Depends entirely on whether she wants an occasion or a good coffee. Ferg's Bar on Shotover Street is open every day from seven in the morning until one the next, so it copes with an early start and a long lunch equally well. Vudu Cafe is the long standing local answer and the one most Queenstown people would pick themselves. If the point is the view and the occasion, The Grille sits at Eichardt's on the lakefront and is the place to go when somebody else is choosing the wine.

Book ahead, and book earlier than you think. Mother's Day is one of the two or three days a year when every decent table in this town is spoken for, and turning up hopefully with your mother in tow is not the memory you are after.

Which drive is worth doing?

The Glenorchy Road, if there is any appetite for more than an hour in the car. It runs along the edge of Lake Wakatipu, it is sealed the whole way, and in May the light on it is better than at any other time of year. For something shorter, the loop around Lake Hayes is about twenty minutes of driving with the reflections doing all the work, and it drops you at Arrowtown without effort. What if she hates a fuss?

Then do less, better. A spa afternoon is the easiest good version of this day and Queenstown has plenty of them, gathered in our guide to warming up indoors. If the plan involves a Gibbston cellar door in the afternoon, decide who is driving before the first pour rather than after it. That road is busy on a Sunday and it is not the day to be having that conversation in a car park.

Build something warm into the middle of the day as well. May here is bright and properly cold at both ends of it, and every good version of this Sunday has a point where everybody sits down indoors with something hot in their hands. Plan that in rather than discovering it halfway up a lookout with a mother who is too polite to say she is freezing.

The thing that actually makes this day work is not the restaurant. It is not being on anybody's timetable. Long breakfast, drive when you feel like it, turn around when she has had enough, home before it gets cold. None of that survives a shuttle schedule, and all of it is the point.
