Where Can You Practise Without Booking a Round?
Frankton Golf Centre, on the corner of Kawarau Road and State Highway 6, about 15 minutes from town. A driving range, a 9 hole course, a putting and chipping green, a pro shop and coaching. Seven days, 9am to 7pm in summer, and buckets are sold until 6pm. It is the cheapest way to hit a ball in this district and the only one on the list you can do on a whim.
Where Do You Get a Proper Round Without the Resort Price?
Arrowtown Golf Club, at 166 Centennial Avenue, 20 kilometres and about 25 minutes out on State Highway 6. It takes bookings and it sits in one of the prettiest corners of the district, up against the hills behind Arrowtown. Walking it is half the point.
Which Course Has the Views?
Queenstown Golf Club, out on the Kelvin Heights peninsula at 759 Peninsula Road. It is 16 kilometres and about 25 minutes, because you go round the bay rather than across it. Visitors are welcome all year round and clubs can be hired, so you can turn up without your own set.
It plays par 72 for men and 73 for women. One thing worth knowing: from mid May to mid September it runs as a 9 hole course, with 18 available as two loops. By November it is back to the full 18, which is one of the better arguments for playing it this month rather than last.

Can You Play the Championship Courses?
Millbrook Resort has two of them, The Remarkables and the Coronet, and all visitors are welcome rather than resort guests only. It sits a few minutes past Arrowtown, so call it half an hour from Queenstown. This is the top end of what you can simply book and go and play.
The Hills is the other name people arrive knowing, and it is a different proposition entirely. It is a championship course with a membership rather than a public course with a tee sheet, so if you want to play it, ring the club rather than turning up hopeful. The easier way to see it is from the other side of the ropes: it is one of the courses the NZ Open is played on.
Which Rental Car Fits Golf Clubs?
Clubs fit in everything we hire, so this is about how many of you there are rather than whether the bag goes in.
- The hybrid SUV, an Outlander or similar, is the easy answer. Most room, no thinking required.
- The hybrid hatchback, an Aqua or similar, takes clubs perfectly well, and the back seat folds down if you need the extra length. It is the cheapest to run and by far the easiest to park at Frankton.
- For a full group with a bag each, ask us about the mini bus. That one is an enquiry rather than an online booking.
Why the Car Makes This Easy
Four of the five are outside the town centre, and the fifth is a driving range you will end up visiting more than once. A round plus the drive either side is most of a day, and the tee time you actually want is rarely the one that happens to fit around somebody else's timetable.
