The Queenstown ski season does not end on one day. It ends over three weekends in October, one mountain at a time. Coronet Peak goes first, then The Remarkables, then Cardrona, and by Labour Day weekend the lifts have stopped and the valley has gone green. Here are the dates, what the snow is like by then, and what October is worth doing if you have missed the last of it.
When Does the Queenstown Ski Season End in 2026?
In stages, across the first three weekends of the month. The published 2026 dates are:
- Coronet Peak, closing day 4 October.
- The Remarkables, closing day 11 October.
- Cardrona, closing day 18 October, which makes it the last of the local fields open.
- Treble Cone finished earlier, on 27 September.
All of them are subject to conditions on the day. Coronet Peak runs 9am to 4pm and Cardrona 8.30am to 4pm. Coronet Peak's night skiing has already finished for the year, so October is daylight only.
What Is the Snow Actually Like in October?
Soft, and better than that sounds. Spring snow firms up overnight and loosens through the morning, so the good window tends to be mid morning onwards rather than first thing, and the upper mountain holds it longest. You will be on the hill in far less clothing than July demanded, and most of the crowd has gone home, which is the real reason people rate the last few weeks of the season.
Which Mountain Is Worth It Late in the Season?
Cardrona is open the longest and sits higher, so it is the safe answer for anything after the middle of the month. Coronet Peak is the closest to town, 16 kilometres and about 30 minutes, which makes it the one worth chancing when the forecast is uncertain, because you have not lost much of a day if it turns out badly. The Remarkables sits between the two on both counts. All three publish daily conditions.
What About Labour Day Weekend?
Labour Day falls on Monday 26 October in 2026, a week after the last field closes. So the first long weekend of the warm half of the year is not a ski weekend at all, and Queenstown treats it that way. It is the weekend the walking tracks, the lake and the road trips take back over. What Do You Do When the Lifts Stop?

What Should You Know About the Drive Up?
The access roads stay in winter condition for as long as the fields are open, and chains can still be required in October. Why the Car Matters More at the End of the Season
Closing weekends are the least predictable days of the year up there. The forecast moves overnight, a field can shut a lift or call the day off, and the right answer is often a different mountain or no mountain at all. Having three fields within an hour of Queenstown is only an advantage if you can change your mind at eight in the morning.
