New Zealand's biggest dress up party comes to Queenstown every winter. When it runs, what it is like, getting there and home, and the rest of the weekend.
Once a winter, Queenstown puts on a costume. Mardi Gras is billed as New Zealand's biggest dress up party, a day of big name DJs and drum and bass at the Queenstown Events Centre, with the crowd dressed as things they would never be seen in at home. If you have ever wanted to see a banana, three astronauts and a man in a wedding dress queue politely for the bar, this is your chance.
It lands in the middle of ski season, often on the Matariki long weekend, which makes it the centrepiece of a proper winter trip rather than a night on its own. When is Queenstown Mardi Gras?
Mid winter, on a Saturday. In 2026 it was Saturday 11 July, the Matariki long weekend, at the Queenstown Events Centre in Frankton, a week after the Ohakune edition on 4 July. The year before it was Saturday 21 June 2025, also over Matariki.
The 2027 date has not been announced yet. Matariki falls on Friday 25 June in 2027, so keep an eye on that weekend, and check the Mardi Gras page on the Audiology site for the official date and tickets as soon as they are released.
What is Mardi Gras like?
Loud, colourful and completely unserious. The 2026 lineup was headlined by Shapeshifter, Holy Goof and TS7, with The Bloody Beetroots, Matrix and Futurebound, Krafty Kuts and a long list of others, plus local favourites on the bill.
The costumes are the other headline. Nobody is judging, but everybody is looking, and turning up in a puffer jacket and jeans is technically allowed and socially risky. Winter still applies once the sun goes down, so plan an outfit you can stay warm in.
How long has Mardi Gras been running?
The party started in Ohakune, at the foot of Ruapehu. Audiology took it over in 2018 and brought it south the following year. The first Queenstown Mardi Gras, in June 2019, was held at the top of Coronet Peak for a crowd of around 3,000. It has since moved down the hill to the Events Centre.
How do you get to and from Mardi Gras?
Not by driving yourself home. It is a party with a bar, so plan the night around that before you plan the outfit. The Events Centre is on Joe O'Connell Drive in Frankton, a short taxi ride from most places to stay, and Green Cabs run around the clock on 0800 76 76 73. Book the ride home early, because every other costume in town will be trying to do the same thing.
That is the one night the car stays parked. The rest of the weekend is when it earns its keep.
