Queenstown has a reputation for being expensive in winter, and if every day is a lift pass, a gondola ticket and dinner in town, it is. But some of the best winter days here cost next to nothing. The lake is free, the walks are free, the frost on the vines in Gibbston is free, and one of the best winter evenings in the district does not charge you to walk in.

Is Ayrburn's Winter Wonderland free?
Walking through the lights is. For winter 2026, Ayrburn's Winter Wonderland runs from 27 June to 31 July, and entry to wander the lit grounds is free for everyone. The ice skating on The Dell and the food and drink are paid for separately, so you decide how much of the evening you want to spend.
It is about twenty minutes from Queenstown on the Arrowtown road, the parking is free and right at the gate, and it gets dark early enough in July that you can turn up around half past four and watch the lights come on. What free walks are there in Queenstown in winter?
Plenty, and three of them start right in town.
Queenstown Gardens. At the east end of the lakefront, and anywhere from ten to forty minutes depending on how often you stop. On a clear frosty morning, with the Remarkables across the water, it is hard to believe it is free.
Frankton Arm Walkway. An easy, flat local favourite from Park Street round the lake to Frankton, an hour to an hour and a half one way. Walk it one way and treat yourself to a hot drink at the Frankton end.
Tiki Trail. About an hour return from the gondola base up through the pines to the top, and it saves you the gondola fare on the way up. It needs a reasonable level of fitness, and in winter the track can be icy in the shade, so wear proper shoes and go in the middle of the day.
What can you do in Arrowtown for free?
Walk through the Arrowtown Chinese Settlement. It sits at the top of Buckingham Street by Bush Creek, a restored group of 1880s huts and Ah Lum's store from the gold rush years, with panels in English and Chinese telling the miners' stories. The main path takes under an hour and is easy enough for buggies. What else is on in Queenstown in winter 2026?
The Remarkables Market runs a winter series, with a date on 5 September for local makers, produce and live music. Mix the paid days with free ones. A ski day or a skate session is a treat, and the lights at Ayrburn, the Gardens and the Chinese Settlement fill the days in between without a ticket in sight. The cheapest things to do around Queenstown are rarely in the middle of town. Ayrburn, Arrowtown and the drives in between are all a short hop by car and a long, cold wait otherwise, and in July it is dark by about half past five. A car turns three free things into one relaxed afternoon, with the warm layers in the boot and nobody watching the clock for the last bus.
One sensible line, then back to the fun: if there is mulled wine at Ayrburn, decide who is driving before you go. The bar keeps a proper selection of alcohol free drinks for whoever has the keys.
