Queenstown Winter Fun Without the Big Price Tag

Ayrburn did winter very well last year.
So well, in fact, that we wrote a whole post about Ayrburn’s Winter Wonderland.
Good news. It is back.
From 26 June, Ayrburn is lighting up again for winter, with the Winter Wonderland Lights returning across the precinct and ice skating on The Dell back for another season.
And honestly, this is one of those easy Queenstown winter evenings we would happily recommend to anyone.
Lights, fires and a proper winter atmosphere
The Winter Wonderland Lights run from 26 June to 31 July and are free to visit, with no tickets required.
You can wander through the illuminated grounds, warm up around the outdoor fires, and make an evening of it with food and drinks around Ayrburn.
There is mulled wine at the Manure Room, whisky flights at the Woolshed, wine tastings in the Barrel Room and pizzas from the Bakehouse.
Basically, all the things you want on a cold Otago night.
We have shared plenty of ideas for winter nights in Queenstown, but Ayrburn is one of the easiest recommendations. You do not need a full day, complicated plans or even snow.
Just wrap up warm and head out.
Get on the ice at The Dell
The ice rink is back too, running from 26 June to 26 July.
Whether you are actually good at skating or spend the entire session clinging to the side, it is a great way to properly lean into winter.
It works for families, couples, groups of friends, or anyone looking for something a bit different after a day exploring Queenstown.
For families especially, it fits nicely alongside some of the other ideas in our guide to winter family fun in Queenstown.
Make an evening of it
Our advice is not to rush it.
Head out in the late afternoon, have a wander, get something to eat, go skating, then stick around as the lights properly come alive.
If you have spent the day on one of our scenic winter drives from Queenstown, Ayrburn is a brilliant place to finish.
Or, if the weather has pushed you towards a slower day, grab a hot drink first using our guide to Queenstown’s best hot chocolate stops, then head out for the evening.
That is the good thing about winter in Queenstown. Not every day needs to be a massive mission.
Getting to Ayrburn
Ayrburn is outside central Queenstown, so having your own car makes the evening much easier.
You can arrive when you want, keep the extra jackets and warm gear in the car, and head back when you are ready rather than trying to plan the night around transport.
At Evolve Rentals, we have fuel efficient hybrids and comfortable SUVs that work perfectly for Queenstown winter exploring.
And since we are talking Ayrburn, car fans might also remember our post on the Ayrburn Classic. Different season, very different temperature, but another very good reason to make the drive out.
One for the June list
Ayrburn’s Winter Wonderland is exactly the kind of winter event we love.
It is easy, relaxed, family friendly, and gives you a proper winter evening without needing to spend the day on a ski field.
The lights run from 26 June to 31 July, with ice skating available from 26 June to 26 July.
Book your car with Evolve Rentals, wrap up warm, and go enjoy one of our favourite Queenstown winter evenings.
