Slippery Tails and Snowy Trails. The Coronet Dog Derby is On

Every August in Queenstown, the snow isn’t just for skiing. It’s for sprinting, barking, and tail-wagging chaos. We’re talking about the legendary Dog Derby at Coronet Peak, and it’s bounding back on Friday, 9th August 2025.

If you’ve never seen over 100 dogs (and their equally energetic owners) charging down a ski field in full snow gear, you’re in for a treat. It’s messy, it’s hilarious, and it’s one of Queenstown’s most beloved winter traditions.

What Is It?

The Dog Derby is exactly what it sounds like. A mad, snowy race featuring dogs of all sizes and their humans, battling gravity and sometimes dignity on the slopes of Coronet Peak.
There are two events:
The Dog Derby. A run from the top of the mountain to the base.
The Dog Barking Contest. A test of vocal cords and volume. No training required.

Whether you're entering with your pooch or just spectating, it’s an absolute must-do for winter vibes and local character.

Getting There

If you’re keen to head up the mountain on your own terms without the wait times or rigid ski bus schedules, having your own car is the way to go. With Evolve Rentals, you can head up early, bring your gear (and your dog’s), and leave whenever suits you best.

It’s all about flexibility. Especially when your co-driver has four legs and a short attention span.

Hot Tip

Warm paws mean happy paws. Bring some dog booties and plenty of snacks for both of you. This isn’t your average day at the park.
