We’ve Arrived in Auckland: Car Hire in the City

Evolve Rentals arrived in Auckland in July 2025. Where to collect your car in the city, and how to drive it one way all the way to Queenstown.
In July 2025, Evolve Rentals opened in Auckland. We had spent years doing car hire the Queenstown way, with a real person handing over the keys and no counter in sight, and we brought the same idea to the biggest city in the country. To celebrate, every Auckland booking at launch got 10% off.
The launch has been and gone. What it started is still here: a car in the middle of the city, handed over by someone who knows the roads, and the chance to drive it all the way to the bottom of the South Island. If you are planning either, booking direct with Evolve Rentals is the simplest way to start.
Where do you collect an Evolve car in Auckland?
At the Grand Millennium Auckland, 71 Mayoral Drive, right in the middle of the city. We partnered with the Grand Millennium team from day one, because a hotel lobby is a far better place to start a trip than a rental desk.
In working hours someone from our team hands over the keys and walks you round the car properly. Outside them the keys can be left with the concierge, so an early start or a late arrival does not turn into a problem. There is also an Auckland Airport option when you book, arranged as an off site collection rather than a desk in the terminal.
Auckland is a collection service. If you want a car brought to your door, that is what we do in Queenstown, where nobody else does it.
Why hire in the city instead of at the airport?
Because most people are already in the city. Airport hire usually means a trip out to the terminal and a drive straight back past the place you were standing in, which is an hour gone before the holiday has started.
From Mayoral Drive you are on the motorway in minutes, and the west coast beaches, the Kumeu wineries and Matakana are all within about an hour. Our guide to collecting a car from a hotel lobby in Auckland covers the collection and the three drives worth doing first, and there are longer ideas in our weekend road trips from Auckland.
Can you hire a car one way from Auckland to Queenstown?
Yes. Because we are in both cities, you can collect a car in Auckland and drop it in Queenstown, or do the trip the other way round. One way hires between the two run for a minimum of 14 days, which, having looked at the map, is about the least this drive deserves.
It is the great New Zealand road trip, end to end, and it is the trip most people only get to do once. Doing it in one car with one company, from a city lobby to a lake town, beats stitching together two rentals and a flight.
What does the drive from Auckland to Queenstown look like?
Roughly three stages, and each one deserves a few days.
Auckland to Wellington is about 640 kilometres on State Highway 1, through Lake Taupō and the volcanic plateau of Tongariro National Park. It is a long day if you rush it and a very good three if you do not.
Then the Cook Strait. The car goes on the ferry from Wellington to Picton, and both Interislander and Bluebridge take cars, with a crossing of about three and a half hours through the Marlborough Sounds. Book your sailing yourself, and book it early: daytime sailings fill up fast in the holidays.
From Picton the South Island opens up: down the Kaikōura coast to Christchurch, then inland past Lake Tekapo and the Mackenzie Country to Queenstown. Christchurch to Queenstown alone is about 480 kilometres, and our guide to the stops worth building that drive around is worth reading before you set off, in either direction.
If you are visiting from overseas, read what visitors need to know before driving in New Zealand first. It covers the roads, the rules and the distances that catch people out.
What comes with every Evolve hire?
Unlimited mileage on every rental, which matters a great deal when the trip is the length of the country. Additional drivers are free, added on the check in form alongside the main driver, so the long days can be shared.
And a person at the start. In Auckland that is a handover in the middle of the city, and in Queenstown it is a team that lives there and knows every road you are about to drive.
