March is the month Queenstown exhales. The summer crowds thin out through the first fortnight, the weather holds on, and for a few weeks you get the place close to its best with a fraction of the people in it.

It is also the month people arrive expecting golden trees and find green ones. So here is what March is actually like, and what it is genuinely good for.

What is the weather like in Queenstown in March?

March is the warmest month of autumn, and for most of it the weather still behaves like summer. Daily highs start the month around 18 degrees and finish it around 15. Overnight lows slide from about 8 down to about 6.

The mornings are the giveaway. You will want a jacket at eight and you will be carrying it by eleven, every day, for about four weeks. Rainfall averages a little under 100 millimetres across the month spread over roughly a third of the days, which in practice means a shower that passes rather than a day written off. Pack layers and stop checking the forecast hourly. It will not help.

Have the autumn colours arrived by March?

Mostly not. March is green. The turn starts at the very end of the month at the earliest, and the fortnight everybody photographs is mid to late April.

It is worth knowing before you build a March trip around the leaves. The trees that turn gold here are the deciduous ones planted by European settlers, so the colour is concentrated in the older settled areas like Arrowtown and Lake Hayes rather than spread across the region, and the native bush stays green all year regardless. How much daylight do you get in March?

More than you expect at the start of the month and noticeably less by the end of it. March opens with a little over thirteen hours of daylight and closes with under twelve. That is an hour and a half gone in four weeks, and you feel it in the last week.

The clocks do not go back until the first Sunday in April, so the whole of March keeps its long evenings. That is the part worth planning around, and it is the strongest argument for having a car sitting outside rather than a timetable to work around. Leaving town at five and still having light to see something is the single best thing about being here this month, and it is the first thing you lose.

What is on in Queenstown in March?

The Motatapu is the fixture the month is built around. On Saturday 6 March 2027 it runs a mountain bike race, a trail marathon, an ultra and shorter runs through high country between Wanaka and Arrowtown, and every event finishes in Arrowtown. The village that afternoon is a very good place to be and a very poor place to look for a car park. Go early, take the win, watch everyone else circle.

The markets are the other reason to keep a Saturday free. The Queenstown Market runs on the lakefront every Saturday of the year, and the Remarkables Market out at Remarkables Park is the seasonal one, running Saturdays until around the end of April. March is one of your last clear runs at the second one.

What is worth doing before the season turns?

Three things get harder after March, and all three are easy right now.

The higher walks. Anything above the valley floor is still warm, dry and comfortable in March. The same track in late May is a different day out with a different amount of clothing involved.

The evening drive. A run out around Lake Hayes or over to Arrowtown after the day has finished works all the way through March and has quietly stopped working by the time winter arrives. If you are here this month, get the car sorted early and spend the evenings while you still have them.

Riding. The heat has gone, the weather settles and the trails are far quieter than they were in January, which makes March about the best riding of the year here. Is March a good time to visit Queenstown?

It is our pick of the year, if you are not coming for the skiing or the leaves. Everything is open, the walking and the riding are at their best, the town is busy rather than full, and accommodation is easier to find than it is in January or July.

The trade is honest enough. You will not get the golden postcard and you will not get snow. What you get instead is the place working properly, which is a better holiday than a better photograph.
