When Do the Queenstown Ski Fields Open?
Around the middle of June, and the date is decided by snow rather than by a calendar.
Coronet Peak is usually first away and it is the closest to town. The Remarkables follows, and Cardrona and Treble Cone over at Wanaka run to their own dates. Every one of them publishes an opening day and then moves it as the season builds, so check the mountain you are actually heading to rather than working off something you read in April.

What Should You Book Before the Season Starts?
Beds first, then the car, then the gear. That order matters more than the timing.
- Accommodation, as soon as your dates are firm. Queenstown in winter is not a town with spare beds
- The car, once the beds are booked. It is the piece most people leave until last
- Skis or a board, a few weeks out. Doing it in town beats doing it in a queue at the base at nine in the morning
- Lift passes, worth checking whether the field is running an early season rate before you pay at the gate
Two moments tighten everything up: the July school holidays, and any weekend that follows fresh snow. The holidays you can see coming. The snow you cannot, which is why booking in May is a calmer business than booking on the Thursday after a big dump.
Where Do You Hire Skis and Boards in Queenstown?
In town rather than at the base, and there are three worth knowing between them.
J&D Ski and Snowboard Rentals on Earl Street have been going since 1974 and advertise the best prices in town. Four days or more gets you a fifth free on a full package. If cost is what decides it, start there.
Quest Snow Centre on Shotover Street have been local for over thirty years and run their own workshop, so the gear comes out tuned. The board side is where they are strongest, with Burton, Capita, Lib Tech and Nitro on the rack.
Browns Ski Shop sit at the premium end and lean towards skis, and they do children's rentals free, which changes the maths if you are bringing a family.
What Is There to Do Before the Snow Arrives?
Most of it, and with nobody in the way.
The autumn colour holds in Arrowtown and out towards Glenorchy well into May, and the roads that are nose to tail in July are empty. Autumn in Queenstown covers where the colour is worth chasing and when it turns.
The drives are the other reason to come early. Scenic winter drives are all doable in an ordinary car and they are at their best now, before the season traffic and while the passes are still clear.
