Carving Rainbows on the Slopes. Winter Pride 2025

For ten days every winter the flags go up, the mountain gets louder, and Queenstown turns several shades brighter. Winter Pride is the biggest snow season pride festival in the southern hemisphere and it belongs to this town. The 2025 edition ran from 15 to 24 August, and this is our write up of it. When is the next Winter Pride?

September 2027, and it is worth knowing before you book anything. There was no festival in 2026. The organisers called a hiatus, saying they could not deliver it to the standard people expect given what the industry was dealing with, and Winter Pride returns to Queenstown from 3 to 12 September 2027 for its twenty fourth year.

Worth noticing that the dates have moved later in the season. August is peak snow and peak crowd. Early September usually still has the cover, keeps the long bluebird days, and is a considerably easier week to find a bed in.

What actually happens during Winter Pride?

It runs all week and it splits roughly in half. There is a mountain programme by day, and a town programme of parties, shows and community events by night, with the two meeting somewhere around an apres ski bar in the late afternoon.

The part people underestimate is how welcoming the daytime side is. You do not need to be a strong skier, you do not need to be part of a group, and a fair proportion of the crowd is there for the atmosphere rather than the vertical.

The town side has run shows, parties and community events over the years, Pride in the Park among them, and the festival guide is the place to check once the 2027 programme lands rather than assuming the last line up repeats. Queenstown helps here, because it is small enough that most of the evening venues sit within walking distance of each other, which is worth knowing when you choose where to stay. The part that is not walkable is the mountain, and that is the part you will be doing first thing every morning.

What is Onesie Day?

The best day of the festival, and our favourite day of the Queenstown winter full stop. In 2025 it fell on Sunday 17 August.

The whole mountain turns out in fancy dress. Fluffy dinosaurs, glittering unicorns and at least one person who has clearly regretted their choice of fabric by eleven in the morning, all carving down the same runs. You do not have to take part to enjoy it. Standing at the top of a lift with a hot drink watching a rainbow of onesies come past is a genuinely good way to spend a morning, and it is free.

Why is a car worth having during the festival?

Because the week does not happen in one place, and half of it happens after the shuttles have finished.

You are on a mountain in the morning, back in town for the afternoon, and out somewhere else entirely at night, usually with a bag of wet gear in the boot. A car takes the logistics out of that. Which mountain is a separate question and depends on conditions and crowd, which we cover in where to head this winter. What about the drive home?

If you are partying, your car is not. Designated driver, a taxi, or just stay the night somewhere central. Nothing ruins a good Pride outfit quite like explaining it to a judge.

The other half of that, and it catches people out far more often, is the drive down a mountain road at the end of a long day. Cold, tired, low sun in your eyes and ice in the shaded corners. Take the descent slowly and let the person behind you get on with their own hurry.

What is worth doing in the meantime?

With no festival in 2026, a Queenstown winter trip has to stand on the rest of it, and it comfortably does. The snow is the same snow, the town is quieter, and the drives around the lake in winter are the best of the year.
