2026 Ski Season Is Here: Where to Head This Winter in New Zealand

Winter has officially arrived, and ski season is finally starting to take shape across the South Island.
For anyone who has been waiting to dust off the ski gear, plan a mountain weekend, or turn a Queenstown, Wānaka or Canterbury trip into a proper winter escape, June is when things start getting exciting.
The mountains are opening, the towns are getting that winter buzz back, and travellers are starting to lock in accommodation, lift passes, gear hire and rental cars before the season gets busier.
We touched on the early winter excitement in our recent post, Winter Has Arrived Early in Queenstown, but now the season is properly underway, it is time to look at where to go and why it pays to plan ahead.
Coronet Peak gets winter started early
Coronet Peak has kicked things off early this year, with winter activity starting from 29/05/26 and the full ski season building from mid June.
Coronet Peak is always a favourite for Queenstown visitors because it is close to town, easy to fit into a day, and ideal if you want a proper winter experience without spending hours on the road.
It is also one of those places that makes Queenstown winter feel properly alive. Early mornings, snowy peaks, hot drinks, mountain views and a quick drive back into town afterwards.
If you are planning a Queenstown ski trip, our previous post Hit the Slopes: Queenstown Ski Season Kicks Off 14 June is still a handy read for getting into the winter mindset.
Mt Hutt opens in Canterbury
For travellers heading through Christchurch, Methven or wider Canterbury, Mt Hutt is another big one to have on the radar.
Mt Hutt is scheduled to open from 12/06/26, giving visitors a brilliant Canterbury ski option and another reason to turn a Christchurch trip into a proper winter road trip.
If you are starting or finishing in Christchurch, it is worth building a little extra time into your plan. A few days in the city, a mountain day at Mt Hutt, and a relaxed drive through Canterbury can make for a really easy winter escape.
For anyone planning time in the region, our 2 to 3 day Christchurch itinerary is a good place to start.
Cardrona and Treble Cone bring Wānaka into the mix
Wānaka is always one of New Zealand’s best winter bases, especially if you want a slightly more relaxed feel than Queenstown while still being close to world class skiing.
Cardrona is listed from 13/06/26 to 11/10/26, while Treble Cone is listed from 27/06/26 to 27/09/26. These dates can always shift depending on conditions, so it is worth checking before you travel.
Cardrona is popular with a wide range of skiers and snowboarders, while Treble Cone is well known for big views, steeper terrain and that classic Wānaka winter feel.
If you are travelling from Queenstown, having your own car gives you more freedom to make the most of the drive, stop when you want, and turn the journey itself into part of the trip.

The Remarkables opens for Queenstown winter
The Remarkables is scheduled to open from 13/06/26, adding another major Queenstown ski option into the mix.
With both Coronet Peak and The Remarkables close to Queenstown, it is easy to build a winter trip around a few days on the mountain, a slower afternoon in town, and a scenic drive when the weather clears.
This is where Queenstown really shines in winter. You can ski in the morning, warm up with a good coffee, head out for dinner, or use a rest day to explore somewhere quieter nearby.
If you are travelling with kids, our post on winter family fun in Queenstown has ideas for making the most of the season both on and off the slopes.
Why June is the time to plan properly
June is exciting because ski season is starting, but it is also the month where winter bookings begin to move quickly.
Accommodation gets busier, ski gear hire starts filling up, and rental car availability can tighten around weekends, school holidays and fresh snow. Even if your exact mountain days are flexible, it is worth sorting the main pieces early.
We covered this in more detail in Get Winter Ready: Why May Is the Time to Book Ahead, and the same applies now that winter has properly arrived.
Getting organised early means you have more choice and less last minute stress. It also makes the trip feel easier. You can arrive knowing your car is sorted, your gear is booked, and you have the freedom to move between town, mountain, accommodation and restaurants without relying on anyone else’s schedule.
Why having a rental car helps in ski season
A winter trip is much easier when you can move at your own pace.
You might want to head up the mountain early, come back down for a late lunch, change plans because of weather, or take a scenic drive on a rest day. Having your own rental car gives you that flexibility.
It is also handy if you are travelling with ski gear, warm layers, food, luggage or family bags. Winter trips usually come with more stuff than a summer weekend, so having space and flexibility makes a real difference.
If you are planning to explore beyond the ski fields, our guide to scenic winter drives from Queenstown is full of easy ideas for days when you want the winter views without necessarily heading onto the slopes.
A fuel efficient hybrid can also make a lot of sense for winter travel, especially if you are mixing town driving with longer day trips. We have written more about that here: Feeling the Fuel Pinch? Why Hiring a Hybrid Just Makes Sense Right Now.
Make time for the winter extras
Skiing might be the main event, but winter in Queenstown and the wider South Island is about more than just the mountain.
There are cosy cafés, lakefront walks, hot chocolates, day trips, winter events, family activities and scenic drives that can turn a ski trip into a proper holiday.
For a slower day between mountain sessions, have a look at our guide to Queenstown’s best hot chocolate stops this winter, or our post on Winter Nights Done Right: Explore Ayrburn’s Winter Wonderland.
If you are travelling later in the season, it is also worth keeping an eye on winter events. Our past posts on Snow Machine Queenstown, Christmas in July in Queenstown, and October in Queenstown: The Last Hurrah of Ski Season are good reminders that winter does not end after opening weekend.
Make the most of winter in New Zealand
Ski season always brings a special kind of energy to New Zealand.
Queenstown feels alive again, Wānaka settles into its winter rhythm, Canterbury gets ready for big mountain days, and travellers start chasing clear mornings, fresh snow and cosy evenings.
Whether you are planning a dedicated ski trip or just want to add a mountain day to your winter holiday, June is the month to start locking everything in.
Book your winter rental car early with Evolve Rentals and enjoy the freedom to explore the mountains, towns and scenic winter roads at your own pace.
