Christchurch turned the volume up in February 2026. Electric Avenue Music Festival took over North Hagley Park for two days on 27 and 28 February, with Split Enz reforming for the occasion on a line up that ran from Kiwi legends to some of the biggest dance acts in the world.

For a lot of people in the South Island, Electric Avenue is not just a festival, it is the excuse for a road trip. And the drive to it is one of the best in the country, which is where a car from Evolve Rentals comes in.

Electric Avenue 2026 ran on Friday 27 and Saturday 28 February 2026 in North Hagley Park, Christchurch. It was the festival's second year as a two day event.

Who played at Electric Avenue 2026?

Friday's headliners were Split Enz, reforming for the festival, alongside Becky Hill, Sammy Virji and Basement Jaxx.

Saturday brought Dom Dolla, Pendulum, Kesha, Ocean Alley and Royel Otis.

That is a line up with something for the parents, something for the kids and something for everyone who spent the whole of Saturday arguing about which of those categories they are in.

How did Electric Avenue begin?

Small, by comparison. The first Electric Avenue was held on Waitangi Day, 6 February 2015, in Hagley Park, with local headliners Shapeshifter, Fat Freddy's Drop and Ladi6 and a crowd of 8,000.

It grew fast. By 2022 it was being described as New Zealand's largest one day music festival, and in 2025 it became a two day event for the first time, drawing more than 70,000 people. The same year, its original organisers Team Event sold part of the festival to international promoter Live Nation.

What should you know before going to Electric Avenue?

The 2026 rules are worth knowing for any year, because a few of them are easy to get wrong:

Gates: on the Friday gates opened at 2pm and closed at 7pm, with music until 10.30pm. On the Saturday they opened at 1.30pm and closed at 7pm, with music until 11pm.

There is no coming back in. Once you leave, you are out for the day.

It is cashless, so bring a card or your phone.

Bring one empty water bottle. Free water stations are on site, and no outside food or drink is allowed.

Tickets must match your government issued ID.

How do you get to Electric Avenue in Hagley Park?

Not by car. The organisers are clear that there is no parking inside Hagley Park, and they recommend public buses, with the number 8 and 29 routes, along with walking, cycling, taxis and ride share.

So leave the car at your accommodation on festival days and use it for everything either side, which is where it earns its keep.

Hagley Park is worth a wander before the gates open anyway. The Christchurch Botanic Gardens sit right beside it along the Avon River, and the central city, with Riverside Market and the colourful shopfronts of New Regent Street, is a short walk away. It is a far better way to spend a festival morning than circling the park looking for a space that does not exist.

Can you drive from Queenstown to Christchurch for Electric Avenue?

Yes, and it is a great way to do it. Christchurch is about 480 kilometres from Queenstown, inland past Lake Tekapo and the Mackenzie Country, and the drive deserves at least a day with stops. The route climbs over the Lindis Pass into golden tussock country, then runs past Lake Pukaki, with Aoraki Mount Cook behind it on a clear day, before it reaches Lake Tekapo and drops down onto the Canterbury Plains. Give it a full day, and aim to arrive the day before the gates open, so the festival starts with a good night's sleep rather than a race against the clock.

What about coming from Auckland?
