Day 1 – Discover Christchurch City
Morning – Riverside and City Highlights
Start with coffee in the central city and wander through the Botanic Gardens along the Avon River. It’s one of the most peaceful spots in town and a great introduction to Christchurch.
From there, explore the CBD and check out:

• The Cardboard Cathedral
• The Christchurch Art Gallery
• A ride on the historic Christchurch Tram

Afternoon – Port Hills Views
In the afternoon, jump in the car and head into the Port Hills. Within 20 minutes you’ll be looking back over the city, Lyttelton Harbour and out towards the ocean.
Drive up towards the Christchurch Gondola area or along Summit Road for sweeping lookout points. Having your own vehicle means you can stop whenever you like and explore at your own pace.
Evening – New Regent Street
Finish the day on colourful New Regent Street. It’s one of the most charming spots in the city, lined with restaurants, bars and heritage buildings that glow at sunset.
Day 2 – Akaroa and the Banks Peninsula
This is where Christchurch really shines.
The drive to Akaroa takes around 90 minutes and winds across the Banks Peninsula with incredible coastal views along the way. It’s easily one of the most underrated road trips in the South Island.
In Akaroa, spend the day:
• Walking along the harbour
• Exploring the French inspired village
• Relaxing by the water
• Joining a wildlife or dolphin cruise
Because you’re driving yourself, you can stop at scenic lookouts and hidden bays on the way. It turns a simple day trip into a proper South Island experience.
Day 3 – Arthur’s Pass
If you’ve got a third day, head west into the Southern Alps towards Arthur’s Pass National Park.
In about two hours, farmland turns into alpine peaks, braided rivers and winding mountain roads. The scenery shifts dramatically and the drive itself is part of the adventure.
Spend the day:
• Stopping at lookouts and waterfalls
• Taking short alpine walks
• Exploring riverbeds and scenic viewpoints
• Grabbing lunch in Arthur’s Pass village
It’s a full but very manageable day trip and gives you a true taste of South Island mountain scenery.
Got Extra Time? Add Lake Tekapo
If you’re extending your stay or have an extra couple of days, Lake Tekapo is a fantastic addition.
Around three hours south of Christchurch, Tekapo is famous for its bright turquoise water, mountain backdrop and big open skies.
With more time you could:
• Walk along the lakeshore
• Visit the Church of the Good Shepherd
• Relax in the hot pools
• Stay overnight for some of the clearest stargazing in New Zealand
Tekapo works best as an overnight addition rather than squeezing it into a tight three day plan.
