Get Winter Ready: Why May Is the Time to Book Ahead

May is the quiet month in Queenstown. The autumn colour has mostly gone, the ski fields are not quite open, and the town takes a breath before winter arrives. It is also the last good moment to book, because once the first proper snow lands, everyone else has the same idea at the same time.

Here is what we would lock in now for winter 2026, the dates that fill first, and why your car from Evolve Rentals belongs near the top of the list rather than the bottom.

When is Queenstown busiest in winter 2026?

July. The New Zealand school holidays run from Saturday 4 July to Sunday 19 July 2026, and Matariki falls right in the middle of them, with the public holiday on Friday 10 July. That puts a long weekend inside a two week school break, in the heart of the ski season, and it is the most crowded stretch of the Queenstown year.

Weekends through the rest of winter run a close second, particularly when a big dump of snow coincides with a clear forecast. If your dates fall in July, book everything now. If they fall later, you have a little more room, but not as much as you might think.

What should you book first for a Queenstown winter trip?

Book in the order things run out, not the order you think of them.

1. Flights and a bed. They are the two things with a hard limit on them, and both move with demand. Book somewhere that suits how you will spend your days rather than simply the cheapest room, because a base in the wrong spot costs you time every single morning.

2. Your car. Rental fleets are finite, and in Queenstown in July the cars go early. Leave it until you land and you are choosing from whatever is left, if anything is. It is the one part of the trip people most often leave until last and most often regret.

4. The things with a set number of spots. Jet boats, horse treks, zipline sessions, scenic flights, spa slots and restaurant tables on a Saturday night. The ice rink at Ayrburn's Winter Wonderland is a good example: the lights are easy to wander into, but skating sessions on a July weekend sell out.

Why book your rental car early for winter?

Because in winter the car is not a nice extra, it is how the trip works. The ski fields, Arrowtown, Wanaka over the Crown Range and a night out at Ayrburn are all a drive, and on a snowy morning you want to leave when the road is ready, not when the shuttle is. Booking early means you get the car you actually want, for the dates you actually need, rather than fitting your plans around what is left.

Do you need snow chains in Queenstown in winter?

On the ski field roads and some alpine passes, yes, you will often be required to carry them, and the rules are set on the day by the road and field operators. What if the snow is not great when you arrive?

Then you have a car and a very good region to use it in. One thing to plan around whatever the snow is doing: the light. In July it is dark in Queenstown by about half past five, so a day trip needs to start earlier than it would in summer. Work backwards from sunset, leave yourself time to get home before the frost settles on the roads, and the short days stop being a problem.
