Why is Coronet Peak open so early this year?

Snow you can make without waiting for the weather. Coronet Peak now runs a snow factory, a closed circuit system that freezes water into snow without chemical additives, so it can build beginner terrain even when the air is not cold enough for ordinary snowmaking.

That is what makes a late May opening possible, and it means more reliable conditions for anyone learning in the first weeks of the season.

What is open at Coronet Peak in the early season?

From 29 May to 12 June, Coronet Peak runs from 10am to 3pm with a limited but very family friendly offering:

• The Peak Gondola for sightseeing
• Magic Carpet lifts serving beginner terrain
• A snow sledding lane, with sled hire
• Ski and snowboard lessons and equipment rental
• The café, and the ski bus from town

How far is Coronet Peak from Queenstown?

Coronet Peak is the closest ski area to Queenstown, about 16km from the town centre on a fully sealed alpine road. In good conditions it is roughly a 20 minute drive, which is why so many people head up for a morning and are back in town for a late lunch.

Parking at the base is free, with shuttles running between the lower car parks, and there is a daily ski bus from town if you would rather not drive on a particular day. Do you need snow chains to drive to Coronet Peak?

Yes, you must carry them. Coronet Peak's guidance is that snow chains must be carried at all times, whatever the weather looks like in town, and fitting them is often required after snowfall or on icy mornings.

How do you sort ski gear before your first day?

Book it ahead and collect it the afternoon before. Coronet Peak rentals can be picked up from the Snow Centre in Queenstown at 25 Shotover Street, or from the rental centre on the mountain.

Coronet Peak recommends collecting from the Snow Centre the afternoon before, so you are fitted and ready before the lifts start. It is especially worth doing if you have a morning lesson, because the queue at the base is the last place you want to be at 9am with a nervous beginner.
